Brief Description:

The Outsiders - The story is told from the point of view of a young boy named Pony living in the dangerous, poor part of town. He lives with his two older brothers that always protect him. The town is split into two parts: the poor and the rich.

The Chocolate Wars - A story about a normal young boy named Jerry going to school. This school has an annual chocolate sale that every student participates in. There is an underground student "mafia' that basically run the show and when Jerry doesn't want to sell chocolate this year he becomes the newest target.

Analysis:

Both these books are told from the perspective of a young boy. They both have some sort are family loss that makes them more independent as a person. (Pony lost his parents in a car accident and Jerry's mother recently passed away) Life isn't easy for them; they are constantly watching their backs to make sure they don't get attacked or trying to stay out of the next target for terrorism. Jerry and Pony need to learn how to grow up on their own and manage difficult challenges that get in the way so that they can get back to their normal lives.

The Outsiders truly show how we take life for granted. Judging people on where they life or what they have/ don’t have in unfair. You can’t truly understand how someone views life or how they actually feel until you have walked a mile in their shoes.
